Every day we are plugged in: constantly looking at our smartphones, staring at computer screens and ending the day in front of our TVs.
And it’s hard to disconnect, but sometimes it is necessary. We don’t see it, but electronics create electromagnetic waves not natural to the body. Over an extended period of time, these waves can affect us.
Tristan Truscott, sensei and founder of the Austin Martial Arts Academy and the Satori Method Academy, says technology is amazing, but using tech responsibly is equally important.
“It’s the electromagnetic pollution in the power lines, the microwaves, the Bluetooths, the cellphones, the towers,” Truscott says. “All of that, it’s constantly bombarding your electromagnetic circuitry. This is what’s getting you disrupted.”
A disrupted electromagnetic circuitry can lead to stress and feeling disconnected with the earth itself. Inner peace may seem unattainable for people who are too connected to tech – they may not realize the best course of action is to perform a tech cleanse.
Being constantly connected to online technology, such as work email on your phone, can lead to unwanted mental stress as well. What would it be like without tech?
According to a study done at Kansas State University, employees need to disconnect themselves from work when at home to remain healthy and energetic for the next day. The study also concludes that disconnecting is harder than it may seem.
“We look at people today and our butts are stuck on these chairs and in these environments and our tech keeps us bound,” Truscott says.
Humans don’t have to hunt for food and a higher level of productivity is achieved with technology. Unfortunately that’s not how our bodies were made to live, so it’s all about maintaining a proper balance.
“When I was a kid … I didn’t have a computer. I didn’t have a cellphone. I played outside, I went to the beach, I rode my skateboard, I ran home from the bus stop. I was outside moving my body,” Truscott says.
The Tech Cleanse
One way to disconnect is to use do not disturb settings or apps to only let the most important people in your life contact you. Constant notifications and emails from work can lead to your body becoming unbalanced and stressed out, filtering those out will allow your mind to focus better.
Sitting for an excessive amount of time, because of work or channel surfing, is also bad for your body. Simple ways to combat this are to stand up and walk around while on the phone, get up during commercials and to move trash cans and other necessities farther away from your desk or reach.
Another way to disconnect is to get off your chair and take the time to go outside multiple times a day. Get away from the Bluetooth connections, electricity and Wi-Fi as much as possible.
Going on a vacation to a remote area away from the city is probably the best way to get away from all of the hustle and bustle and electromagnetic bombardment. Even if it is only one day, it will help.
Technology is an incredible thing with many positives, but everything needs some moderation. Give yourself a tech break every now and then.
